Seyfert Galaxies: Iron Lines
Scientific paper
The detection of a broad K-fluorescence iron emission line in the AO2 ASCA observation of the peculiar Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 is reported. The Gaussian dispersion σ is bigger than 0.2 keV at the 99% level of confidence if reflection by a plane-parallel infinite slab is assumed. If the origin of the line is an X-ray illuminated relativistic disk, the detected line profile is consistent both with a "cold" disk at moderate inclination (i ≅ 30°) and with an almost face-on ionized disk. The hypothesis of a "warm" reflector might account for the relatively high equivalent width (≡300 eV). Such outcomes are in good agreement with the first evidence of the skewed and broad line profile detected by ASCA in a 200-ks observation of the archetypical Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG -6-30-15 (Tanaka et al. 1995).
