X-Ray Surveys: Active Galactic Nuclei

Scientific paper

The ROSAT International X-ray Optical Survey (RIXOS) has provided a sample of over 300 X-ray sources in a medium depth, flux-limited survey covering 15 square degrees. The survey is characterised by a high level of completeness in optical identifications, and a broad sampling of source parameter space. The authors report work on the AGN component of the sample which suggests that there are relationships between the optical and X-ray continuum properties of these objects. A promising explanation for these effects is absorption in a medium external to the central engine. It is possible that one is witnessing the tail of an absorbing column distribution which extends to the population of highly absorbed sources being discovered in the medium energy X-ray band.
