The authors present the analysis of deep (20 ks) PSPC observations of two selected regions in the outskirts of the LMC. The search resulted in 126 discrete sources with fluxes in the 0.5-2.0 keV band down to 7×10-15erg cm-2s-1. Only four of these sources were previously known. Five more sources were preliminarily identified with foreground stars because of positional coincidence. Using the extragalactic log N-log S relation, the authors find an AGN contribution of 72±9 sources. The remaining 24±9 sources cluster in the flux interval (1-2)×10-14erg cm-2s-1. Although this sample may still contain a small contribution from so far unrecognized foreground objects, the authors conclude that the excess constitutes the first detection of a population of stellar LMC sources with luminosities below 1034erg s-1. At most 20% of the excess sources can be explained by OB stars and other known types of stellar X-ray sources. Possible counterparts include LMXBs with low accretion rates.
