Interstellar Bubbles: Stellar Winds, Interstellar Bubbles: X Rays

Scientific paper

The authors present their ROSAT PSPC observations of wind blown interstellar bubbles around Wolf Rayet-(WR) and Of-stars. Their PSPC sample comprises NGC 6888, S 308, NGC 2359 around WR-stars and NGC 7635 around a late type Of-star. These are 4 of the 7 wind bubbles most promising for observable X-ray emission in the Galaxy. Only two of the candidates have been detected by ROSAT, namely NGC 6888 (Wrigge et al. 1994) and S 308 (Wrigge, 1995), and upper limits were derived for the others. Whereas S 308 shows the geometry of a filled bubble, NGC 6888 is dominated by X-ray filaments. The former probably represents a dynamically young and undisturbed bubble, the latter a mature bubble with well developed shell instabilities. The authors compare the spatial and spectral properties of the X-ray emission with current models. Although new models are well capable of reproducing the morphology of the shells they have severe difficulties in describing the X-ray emission of the hot bubble.
