Scientific paper
The authors present narrow-band X-ray images of Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) acquired with the solid-state spectrometer (SIS) onboard the ASCA observatory. The remnant is mapped in several prominent emission lines and in the 1.4-1.7 keV and 4-6 keV continua. These are the first images of this remnant at any wavelength which show the spatial distribution of emission from individual elements other than H. Using image reconstruction techniques the authors achieve a spatial resolution of ≡0'5. All line and continuum images are morphologically similar to the broadband image, but also display distinctive brightness knots and features. Ratios of the azimuthal image brightness profiles show significant spatial variation in relative line strengths around the rim of the remnant; the inferred temperature variation is a factor of 1.5-2.0 for Si and S. The ratio of Fe K and Fe L requires a temperature ⪆×10 higher for Fe than for Si and S. Radial image brightness profiles are not well-fit by any simple geometric model, but the lack of detectable Doppler gradient across the remnant suggests a spherical emitting geometry. Unlike the SNR Cas A, no significant correlation is found for Tycho between the X-ray 4-6 keV continuum and the radio morphology.
