Supernovae: X-Ray Spectra

Scientific paper

The authors reanalysed the Mir-Kvant-HEXE observations of SN 1987A. Their results are in general compatible with previously published results; however, the accuracy has been improved, and additional observations have been analysed. Hard X-ray emission is already detected 143 d after the explosion. The coincidence of the observed hard X-ray source with the position of SN 1987A is confirmed; the offset between the two positions is 2'0±2'5. The authors performed Monte/Carlo simulations for a model in which gamma ray photons from the radioactive decay of 56Co and 57Co are comptonized in the expanding supernova ejecta. If strong mixing of the radioactive material into the envelope is assumed, this model reproduces well the observations in the energy range 45-100 keV. The observed emission in the energy range 20-45 keV is underestimated by the model, unless the strength of the photoabsorption in the envelope is reduced by a factor of the order of 5. The authors derived a value of 1.06±0.45 for the abundance ratio 56Co/57Co relative to the Sun. The observational results and predictions of their model are compared to X-ray observations of other instruments.
