X-Ray Background: Neutron Stars, Neutron Stars: Interstellar Matter

Scientific paper

Old isolated neutron stars (ONSs) accreting the interstellar medium may show up as very weak, soft X-ray emitters. The authors show that their contribution to the unresolved X-ray background in the 0.5-2 keV band may be as high as 12-25%, explaining a fraction of the soft excess which is not associated with active galactic nuclei. It is also proposed that, besides molecular clouds, a very favourable environment for ONSs detection is the "Wall", a relatively high-density region in the vicinity of the Sun. ONSs should account for a few percent of the non-optically identified, bright sources detected by the ROSAT All Sky Survey in the Wall direction.
