Ground-based observations of the high-luminosity (3.3 x 10 to the 12th solar luminosities) IRAS galaxy 23060 + 0505 are reported. It has a 0.5-100 micron energy distribution characteristic of a Seyfert 1 galaxy, but very little sign of the broad Balmer lines normally seen in active galaxies. It is argued that the galaxy contains a hidden active nucleus that is surrounded by dust thick enough to absorb visible light but thin enough to leave the infrared energy distribution virtually undistorted.
