X-Ray Binaries: Black Holes
Scientific paper
The presence of stellar-mass black holes is beyond doubt. The compact objects in nine X-ray binaries have been established to be black holes from their mass lower limit exceeding 3 Msun. Based on the common X-ray properties of these established black-hole binaries, a distinct spectral shape characterised by an ultrasoft component and a hard power-law tail is identified to be a signature of a black-hole binary. There exist ≡20 black-hole binaries showing this signature. Only three of them are high-mass systems, and they are persistent. The other low-mass systems are all transient sources. The total number of black-hole binaries in our Galaxy, most of which are in quiescence, is estimated to be as many as 1000 or even more. Close similarities between the black-hole binaries and active galactic nuclei in their characteristics are noted, despite huge difference in the scale and power. Some interesting X-ray spectroscopic features observed from black-hole binaries are also presented.
