Narrow- and broad-band CCD imaging and high-quality optical spectroscopy are presented for the Seyfert 2 galaxies Mrk 78 and I Zw 92. Several problems associated with the original interpretation of the secondary emission component in Mrk 78 are shown. Models in which the secondary component is an extranuclear 'cloud' photoionized by the primary component are unlikely. Rather, the ionizing continuum for the secondary component must be located within the 'cloud'. Narrow-band imaging of Mrk 78 shows extensive asymmetric structure in the host galaxy. Patches of emission line excesses are confined almost completely to the western portion of the galaxy, making the 'nuclear explosion' suggestion for the origin of these regions unlikely. High-resolution emission line spectra of I Zw 92 reveal that the moderate-to-high ionization line profiles all have a large poleward asymmetry at a low intensity level. A bridge of primarily continuum emission connects I Zw 92 and a companion galaxy to the northeast.
