The significance of the identification of organic materials in the dust of Comet Halley for the understanding of solar system and biological evolution is addressed. The evolution of the solar nebula is reviewed, and the role of carbonaceous chondrites in helping to understand that evolution is considered. Phase separation in the early earth is discussed, as is a scenario for the evolution of life.
