Bothun (1984) has suggested that superior results can be achieved in the normalization of galactic H I content by using the hydrogen mass-to-infrared luminosity ratio. It is shown here that the correlation between the M(H I)/L(H - 0.5) ratio and the infrared luminosity L(H - 0.5) cannot be interpreted as a gas-content/luminosity relation. A statistical decomposition suggests that it is mainly a relation between (1) the infrared luminosity perturbated by the H I content and (2) the infrared luminosity.
