Quasars: Emission Line

Scientific paper

A search for CO(1-0) line emission from nine quasars and one radio galaxy at z~4 has been conducted using the VLA. Also, one quasar at z=4.7 was searched for HCN (1-0) emission. Velocity coverage was >2000 km s^-1 in all cases. No detections were obtained, with upper limits on peak line flux densities in the 2-5 mJy/beam range. Corresponding upper limits on molecular gas masses are typically several X10^11 solar mass, assuming the standard Galactic CO to H2 conversion factor and a CO linewidth of 3000 km s^-1.
