Coudé spectra from the innermost 2arcsec of NGC 4151 are presented. Line profiles of a range of ions from O0 to Fe6+ are compared. With the possible exception of [Fe VII] λ6087, all lines appear to be moderately but significantly blueshifted relative to the well defined systemic velocity of (1000±3) km s-1. The profiles show no gross asymmetries and have usually a narrower core and a wider wing than a gaussian of same half-maximum width. The line width increases with rising ionization potential; a correlation with critical density may be spurious. The interplay of line width variation and profile shape is emphasized from which strong evidence for a system of optically thick clouds and the fallacy of occasionally used simple models are inferred. Evidencve for internal rather than external obscuration calls for a velocity field significantly influenced by gravitation. A more detailed, but tentative scenario is proposed.
