The authors report on Cousins V, R, I CCD surface photometry of 31 bright elliptical galaxies. The isophote analysis yields color-independent systematic deviations from pure ellipses of 0.3% to 2.5% of the semimajor axis length in 26 of the galaxies. These deviations occur in the form of disk- or box-shaped components and reflect peculiar distributions of the stars. It is found that 9 of the 13 galaxies with boxy isophotes are radioloud (PR > 1020.5W/Hz) but that only one of the 13 galaxies with disk components has radio emission above this limit. It is argued that box- or disk-shaped isophotes can be tracers for different tracks of galaxy evolution and may be directly correlated to the origin of nuclear radio activity.
