A technique is developed to estimate the distribution of a parameter (such as mass or luminosity) in a sample of astronomical objects in the case where some of the objects have only detection limits. The basic principles and the derivation of the method are explained; the statistical uncertainty of the method is evaluated; and numerical results for several sample problems based on published H I data are presented in tables and graphs. The method is shown to be similar to but simpler to use than that of Avni et al. (1980). The importance of obtaining complete observations of a given sample, even if the proportion of detections is low, is stressed.
