The authors present new photometric (optical and infrared) and spectroscopic observations of the Be star HDE 245770, the optical counterpart of the transient X-ray source A 0535+26. They derive a B0 III spectral type, slightly different from previous determinations, which places HDE 245770 at a distance d = 2.6±0.4 kpc, inside the Perseus arm of the Galaxy. The authors use their radial velocity measurements together with published data (Hutchings et al., 1978) and a recently proposed X-ray orbital solution (Sato, 1985) to constrain the geometry of the binary system. They assume a classical Be envelope of low expansion velocity and discuss the possible densities, velocity laws and structures of the envelope compatible with the observed IR excess and X-ray flux at periastron and apoastron.
