Solar wind and IMF observations obtained upstream from the earth's bow shock by the AMPTE UKS and IRM spacecraft have been analyzed along with EISCAT dayside ionospheric flow data in order to study the relationship between the ionospheric flow and the Bz component of the IMF. The form of this relationship is found to depend strongly on latitude and local time, and these dependencies are interpreted in terms of a twin-vortex flow pattern in which the magnitude and latitudinal extent of the flows become successively larger as Bz becomes successively more negative. The ionospheric response time to changes in IMF Bz is found to be very rapid.
