The authors investigate the changes in the radius of an accretion disc caused by a temporary enhancement of the mass transfer in a binary. They show analytically that, after an initial transient shrinking, the disc expands to a larger radius when the mass transfer is increased. After the end of the mass transfer enhancement, the disc shrinks to its original radius. These results are in agreement with observations of dwarf nova outbursts. A crude numerical calculation confirms the analytical results. The authors propose that continuous monitoring of the disc radius through a dwarf nova outburst cycle can provide a criterion to distinguish between the different outburst models.
