The collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter was one of the most important, and certainly most exciting, celestial events in the history of human observation of the heavens. The 1995 Helen Sawyer Hogg lecture, delivered at the meeting of the Canadian Astronomical Society held in Penticton, British Columbia, is a personal recollection of the event from the point of view of one of the comet's discoverers. The present written version includes an informal discussion of what scientists learned from the event.
