The IRAS sky survey mission has opened a new window to the cold
universe. The next step is ESA's cryogenically-cooled ISO-satellite, an
infrared observatory of unprecedented sensitivity and versatility. It
will be followed by large warm telescopes (FIRST, LDR), devoted mainly
to spectroscopic studies in the far infrared region.
