This paper presents forbidden Fe II 1.644 micron line emission results in the archetypal type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 and in the starburst galaxies, NGC 3256 (partially merging), NGC 5253 (dwarf E-S0), and He 2-10 (blue compact dwarf). Based on the present data and previously published data, it is found that: (1) the forbidden Fe II widths of Seyferts are considerably broader than those of starburst galaxies, (2) the forbidden Fe II intensity relative to the Br-gamma line intensity is stronger in Seyferts than in starburst galaxies, and (3) Seyfert and starburst galaxies have almost the same intensity ratio of forbidden Fe II 1.644 micron to H(2) v = 1-0 S(1) in the present sample. The latter suggests that both forbidden Fe II 1.644 micron and H2 emission are closely related and thus due to shock excitation.
