A simulation of the basic large scale structure of the low-redshift universe shows that voids are less pronounced in the distribution of Ly-alpha absorbers at high redshifts than they are in the distribution of galaxies today. It is suggested that this difference could be due to either the different objects used (Ly-alpha absorbers vs galaxies) or the different redshifts involved. It is noted that the present Ly-alpha correlation may also be due to clusters superimposed on a random background, with no voids as such. Implications of the results for the evolution of large-scale structure in the universe are considered.
