The nearby quasar 0241+622 was observed at 15 epochs between 1984 October and 1986 December in the J, H, K and Larcmin photometric bands and with a 20arcsec aperture. In the J band the emission remained constant, while in the H and K bands it showed significant changes on time intervals of the order of one month. Assuming that the J band flux is mostly due to the host galaxy, and combining the present data with those obtained earlier by Soifer et al. (1979), it is concluded that the frequency spectral slope αHK(Fν≡ν-α) of the variable component undergoes very large variations, and increases from 1.9 to at least 8 as the flux decreases. This behaviour is tentatively explained as resulting from the nearly exponential tail of a synchrotron spectrum of electrons with a sharp and variable high energy cut-off.
