TMC 1 has been mapped in the NH3 (1, 1), HC7N(21 - 20), and C4H (N = 2 - 1 (both F = 3 - 2 and 2 - 1)) transitions with the 100-m telescope and an angular resolution of 40arcsec - 50arcsec. The anti-correlation between ammonia and the cyanopolyynes known from previous studies is clearly seen in these maps. The results show that there is definitely a shift of approximately 1' (0.04 pc) between the peaks of the HC7N and C4H maps. The authors discuss whether such differences can be due to spatial variations in density and consequent differences in excitation.It is concluded that in the case of ammonia and the cyanopolyynes, large abundance gradients are present within TMC 1 but the question of an HC7N/C4H abundance gradient is open. The results are discussed in the light of current models for the formation of long carbon-chain molecules.
