The development of the detector subsystem for the ESA Hipparcos astrometric satellite at the Utrecht space-research laboratory and plans for its calibration are reviewed. The major components of the detector subsystem include the main detector assembly, the image-dissector tube, the star-mapper detector assembly, and the detection electronics box. The technical specifications for these components are listed in a table, and consideration is given to the design concept, fabrication, and testing. The photometric and geometric calibration of the instruments is to be based on a 12-h set of observational data; sample estimates of the accuracy obtainable are discussed.
