An object from the Kuiper Belt is now inside the orbit of Saturn, inviting close-up studies. Perhaps once in 20,000 years the giant comet nucleus, Chiron, should pass especially close to Saturn. On 14 Feb. 1996, Chiron will reach perihelion at a range of just 8.5 au from the Sun. On 1 Apr. 1996, Chiron will be at perihelion opposition, its closes to Earth until 2047. Chiron's approach to and passage through perihelion offers a unique opportunity (in our lifetimes) to study this enormous comet or planetesimal at four-times closer range than its cohorts in the Kuiper Disk. Given this opportunity, about 50 planetary astronomers around the world have banded together to form a loosely knit group called the Chiron Perihelion Campaign (CPC). Various aspects of Chiron and the CPC are discussed.
