The phase function (PF) of lunar-feature brightness is investigated on the basis of a fundamental catalog of lunar optical characteristics for selected regions. The albedo dependence of the PF is examined, and the nature of the opposition effect is discussed. It is shown that the exponential form of the PF at small phase angles is due to the Poisson distribution of random values of the parameters which form the PF. The phase curve of the contrast between maria and highlands is interpreted.
