The carbonate minerals in shergottite EETA 79001 were probably formed by weathering reactions on its parent body. If so, and if the volatiles on this body were degassed from the interior by volcanic processes, it is then possible to use the difference in oxygen isotopic composition between the silicates and carbonate to estimate the abundance ratio of water to carbon dioxide on the parent body. This ratio, about three to one by weight, is consistent with several estimates for degassed volatiles on Mars.
