Scientific paper

The paper examines the question of reducing the plane boundary value problem concerning the spreading of ionospheric currents with tensor conductivity to the problem of energy-functional minimization. It is shown that, when homogeneous boundary conditions of the first, second, and third kinds are specified, the two aproaches are equivalent only in the case of constant Hall conductivity. The form of the energy functional obtained here is distinguished from the conventional functional having the form of global energy release due to Joule dissipation by the presence of two additional components.
