Shot-noise models provide a useful mathematical representation for some physical models for the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) recently observed from several bright Galactic bulge and burst X-ray sources. Various authors have described the power spectra arising from different versions of the QPO shot-noise model. In this paper the authors provide the first discussion of moment analysis of the time series expected from QPO X-ray sources. They calculate analytic formulae for the first three moments for the time series arising from various versions of the QPO shot-noise process. These formulae are valid for a binned continuous signal in the limit of a sufficiently small bin size and sufficiently large number of bins. The effects of counting statistics, time resolution, finite observing time, and operational characteristics of the detector are best studied through the use of a Monte Carlo simulation code.
