Analytic approximations have been obtained for photoionization cross sections from hydrogenic and nonhydrogenic nl-subshells. The present representations satisfy the condition that the S2 oscillator strength sum rule is not violated. The cross-section approximations are used to determine the photorecombination rates, as functions of temperature, in terms of hypergeometric functions. The method allows the photorecombination and photoionization rates to be expressed in analytical forms which are Z-scaled.
