We present the results of a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of a large
sample of medium-faint-flux sources detected serendipitously with the
XMM-Newton observatory. We also show the preliminary results of a
similar study that we are conducting on the brightest sources detected
with XMM-Newton in a deep exposure of the Lockman Hole field.
