The nearby Sc galaxy NGC 253 has been imaged in the light of Hα (λ6563) and near-infrared [S III] (λ9532). Anomalous enhancements in the [S III]/Hα emission ratio are seen throughout the barlike inner disk. If interpreted as the consequence of reddening by foreground dust, these enhancements indicate the presence of concealed H II regions. Visual extinctions are estimated to range between 3 and 7 mag, with the greatest extinctions seen on the SW side of the major axis. A near-linear correlation is found between the corrected Hα fluxes and the CO intensities measured by Scoville et al. (1985), thus implying that on large scales the massive star formation depends linearly on the available molecular gas - a result also obtained in less inclined and obscured galaxies such as M51. The primary characteristics that differentiate NGC 253 from other Sc type galaxies are the stronger concentration of star-forming activity toward the nucleus; the richer presence of massive star formation and the higher overall star-forming efficiency.
