The authors have observed the Mira variable star U Herculis in the 1667 MHz OH mainline using the European VLBI Network. They have detected a bright blue-shifted compact spot from the front side of the expanding envelope, but no corresponding redshifted spot from the back side. It is possible that this spot is the amplified image of the continuum emission from the central star. This result suggests that the OH emission from Mira variables may be used to link the optical and radio reference systems. Other bright features present in the OH spectrum do not show any compact structure implying that structures on other scale-sizes should exist.
