The three general schemes for the origin of H I-deficient galaxies, viz. primordial deficiency, direct gas loss and increased astration, are expected to lead to qualitatively different predictions for the galaxies' surface brightnesses. A sample of H I-deficient galaxies in the Virgo Cluster are shown to have lower deficient brightnesses than non-deficient galaxies. This suggests that the galaxies have been deficient in H I for a significant fraction of their lifetimes, possibly since the time of disc formation.
