Venus passed through inferior conjunction on 1999 August 20.1 In the following weeks, the planet climbed steeply into the morning sky. There, high in the south-east, where Leo and Virgo faded into morning, Venus shone white through the pale orange and dark blue twilight sky. The magnificent spectacle was accompanied on many days in September and October by excellent atmospheric clarity and stable seeing.
