The SOIR instrument (Solar Occultation in the Infra-Red) is a new type of high resolution spectrometer which can be used to measure the isotopes of water vapor and CO_2 in the atmosphere of the Earth and other planets. The instrument consists of a combination of a high dispersion grating spectrometer working in a high order of diffraction, combined with an AOTF (Acousto-Optic Tunable Filter) which isolates only one single order of diffraction at a time. The detector is a 2D Sofradir HgCdTe matrix, cooled to 100 K by a cooler machine and evacuating the heat through a radiator. A laboratory prototype was constructed, which performances will be reported (resolution 20,000). A flight instrument (7 kg) is being prepared to fly on the Venus Express ESA mission, as a co-operation between IKI, Service d'Aéronomie and BISA. It has several advantages over a Michelson interferometer: no FT is necessary, the intensity spectrum is recorded directly on the detector ,and the zero level is obtained with great accuracy. The diffraction order of the spectrometer can be changed in a fraction of millisecond, and only interesting orders of the spectrum may be recorded, providing great versatility and efficiency. In the standard solar occultation mode, the spectrum of the sun is obtained first outside the atmosphere, then through the atmosphere, to measure atmospheric absorption features. For Earth, a near nadir mode may be used in addition, where the solar scattered light by the ground (or, better, reflected by the water surface at the solar glint point) is analyzed to retrieve the total quantity of H_2O, CO_2, their isotopes and other species. It could be used in particular to monitor CO_2 accurately over the globe, in order to map sources and sinks of CO_2.
