The conceptual development and funding status of large, new-technology telescopes (NTTs), which are among the highest priorities listed by an upcoming National Academy of Sciences report, is considered with attention to the enhancements of observational capability promised by their operation. Projects discussed include (1) the University of Texas 7.6-m primary mirror diameter NTT, (2) the University of California 10-m diameter NTT, and (3) the joint, Kitt Peak National Observatory/Universities of Arizona, Texas and California program for the design and construction of a national NTT whose effective diameter is 15 m, for a light-collecting capacity that is twice that of the 20 largest existing telescopes combined. It is expected that the NTTs will complement the operation of the NASA Space telescope, which may function as a scout for interesting objects that can then be studied in greater detail by the NTTs.
