After the secondary maximum in September 1981, the solar activity decreased somewhat in autumn (monthly means of the relative number according to SIDC Uccle: 161.2, 135.6, and 147.1). The preliminary relative-number annual mean of 139.9 for 1981 is approximately 15% lower than in the two preceding years. Solar activity during autumn 1981 was not very uniform. Numerous sunspots were observed during the first half of the month, but there was little activity during the second half. The great width of the fluctuation was particularly pronounced in December. On December 10, the SIDC relative number reached with 271 the highest value for two years. However, the relative number decreased to 57, the lowest value of the quarter, during an interval of only 10 days.
