The implementation of design tolerances including filter specifications is discussed for the VLA radio telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The signals are transformed into digital code at the outputs of the final IF amplifiers, with the compensating time delays and multipliers functioning digitally, and except for delay inequalities, all characteristics under consideration are functions of the analog circuitry preceding digitization. The frequency responses of the receiving channels of the array and the variations between them for different antennas are factors that limit the accuracy and sensitivity of the instrument. An algorithm is presented for performing a least squares solution for antenna gains, and the variation of the signal-to- noise ratio over the channels of a spectral line correlator system is analyzed.
