A three dimensional hybrid code has been developed and applied to the interaction of the solar wind with comets. The code includes the kinetic effects on the characteristic ion scales sizes. Cometary ions and solar wind ions are described by the particle in cell technique and they are regarded as separate species with their own specific dynamic behavior. The field equations are solved on a curvilinear grid which is adapted to the expected shape of the interaction region. This adapting increases the numerical efficiency of the code. Simulation results for the interaction of the solar wind with weak comets at different heliocentric distances are presented. The different features of the plasma environment are discussed, such as the structured cycloidal tail, non-linear Mach cones, bow shock and diamagnetic cavity formed at stronger comets. It is found that the typical Mach cone structure of the coma known from gasdynamics and magnetohydrodynamics is strongly modified, i.e. multiple, asymmetric shaped Mach cones appear. The transition from the asymmetric shaped to the symmetric shaped coma is investigated. The structures are strongly correlated to multiple shock structures occurring at stronger comets. The detailed theoretical investigations of outgassing bodies are of interest for the interpretation of measurements at Borelli and future data from the Rosetta target. They are also relevant for other non-magnetized bodies in the solar system, e.g. Mars and Venus.
