The necessary conditions for mass flow through an accretion disc to be modulated by viscous variations are examined. It is shown that outburst behaviour is possible if the disc undergoes a global limit-cycle in which the viscosity is a two-valued function of disc structure. An attempt is made to model the eruptions of dwarf nova discs as a limit-cycle. The resulting light curves exhibit discontinuous changes in luminosity. If the viscosity is imposed, by some external agency, as a function of time, then improved light curves are obtained. Nonetheless, it is not possible to obtain the whole range of dwarf nova light curves, and those which are fitted require a restricted range
