The effects of upper atmosphere and ground level air turbulence and of structural vibration on telescope image quality are discussed. Turbulence due to thermal properties of the ground, topology, and the telescope tower and dome is considered. Correction for atmospheric seeing for high spatial resolution solar observations is restricted to a few 100 A bandwidth, so the need to minimize turbulence, e.g., by removing obstacles which deflect turbulence layers into the telescope line of sight, is stressed. The replacement of air by helium in the telescope tube is suggested as a means to overcome heating of optical components. Telescope vibrations can be reduced by having support structures with natural frequencies as high as possible.
