The ionospheres of Venus, Earth and Mars have layers that are dominated by molecular ions. Located in relatively dense neutral atmospheres, the photo-chemical framework can be used to understand their sources of variability. In this study, we compare observations made by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) that characterize the day-to-day variability of peak electron density under different seasonal conditions. On Earth, ionosonde observations on the same days as the MGS results are used to assess the variability of the terrestrial E-layer. Both statistical analyses and computer modeling are used to relate the ionospheric behavior to solar irradiance effects. The results show a strong control by the solar photon component for ionospheric variability on both planets.
