The westerly flow modification by amplified planetary waves and blocking are very important for the formation of the large scale and the regional weather anomalies. There are examined the coherency between Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation indices and temperature variations in Lithuania in this paper. The most informative indices were selected for this purposes: the Arctic Oscillation (AO) index as Northern Hemisphere leading mode, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) as most prominent circulation mode in the North Atlantic and Europe, the blocking index (defined by Tibaldi and Molteni, 1990), some teleconnection patterns East Atlantic (EA), Scandinavian (SCAND), East Atlantic-Western Russia (EATL-WRUS) and Polar Eurasia. The AO index appears to be the most successful indicator of temperature regime in cold season in Lithuania. The NAO is significant with its extreme values during late winter and mid summer periods. Blocking index is significant during durable blocked flow conditions over middle North Atlantic (in winter) and the magnitude of negative temperature anomalies (in Lithuania) depends on the downstream trough extension. In summer only continental blocking contributes large positive anomalies. The large values of other indices, such as EA, SCAND, EATL-WRUS, are usually superimposed by large values of NAO, AO and have less potentials as diagnostic and prognostic tools.
