There are several elements that affect the lunar surface because it is exposed to space. Collectively, they are called ``space weathering'' processes. These mechanisms alter the inventory of volatiles at the lunar cold traps. We simulate the evolution of ice layers at lunar cold traps with a Monte Carlo model. It follows the hydrogen content in a column of regolith modified by space weathering over time. The results are compared to the hydrogen concentrations deduced from the Lunar Prospector Neutron Spectrometer experiment. Migration of solar wind hydrogen in the form of water vapor is sufficient to explain the observations. However, cometary water might also contribute to ice in lunar cold traps. We investigate the amounts and depths of ice that would be needed to be detectable over the enrichment due to migration of solar wind-derived water vapor to the cold traps.
