A link between carbonaceous chondrites and matter in the earth's upper mantle is established by comparing the isotope compositions of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and inert gases. A comparison is also made of the proportion of volatiles and the content of the principal rock-forming elements in the upper mantle and in various types of meteorites. It is thought that many aspects of the earth's geology derive from the role played by carbonaceous chondrites in the formation of the earth's crust. These aspects include the existence of a hydrosphere and the fact that life is based on carbon and water.
