We have developed a new computer graphic technique to use in reconstructing plate tectonic evolution and to make movies illustrating this evolution. Using this technique, we have deciphered the evolutionary history of the Juan de Fuca area in the northeast Pacific, and show that a combination of seafloor spreading and rift propagation can explain this seemingly complex area as a simple consequence of the interaction of two rigid plates.
