Beagle 2 GAP (Gas Analysis Package) will optionally conduct the first in situ measurement of the soil water content on Mars since the Viking landers. For the first time, a vertical profile of soil humidity in the upper 1.5 m could be obtained, which may reveal whether the water has originated from the atmosphere or from the deeper regolith. To facilitate the data interpretation later on, we analyse the likely soil humidity condition at the Beagle 2 site (Isidis Planitia) in comparison with the Viking sites on the basis of Mars Odyssey subsurface hydrogen data as well as a theoretical model which takes into account the climate and soil properties. The Mars Odyssey data indicate that the soil humidity at the Beagle 2 site is similar or slightly lower than at the Viking 1 site and substantially drier than the Viking 2 site. The amount of adsorbed water near the surface in equilibrium with the atmospheric vapour abundance is also smaller at Beagle 2 than at Viking 1 and Viking 2 during most of a Mars year. We develop a concept how to interpret qualitatively the vertical profile Beagle 2 GAP may reveal.
